Doctor Who – The Time Lord
Who Is Doctor Who?
Dr Who is an eccentric yet compassionate extra-terrestrial Time Lord, he zips through time and space to solve problems and battle injustice across the universe.
What’s The Business Connection?
All businesses face problems and, I think it’s fair to say, face injustices from time to time. So, the question is what lessons can be learnt from the Time Lord? Well, at Honey Bee Accountancy we certainly can’t time travel, even though I often tell people I can, but we can USE time to solve problems.
What Time Problem?
Everybody has the same 24 hours in a day, Steve Jobs (RIP), Alan Sugar, Richard Branson, they all have the same 24 hours a day that you and I do. So, how do they achieve so much?
They use their time more wisely and smartly.
So, now the question is what can YOU do with YOUR 24 hours more effectively.
Here’s the thing, you can’t manage time. I used to hate when people told me that you couldn’t manage time. But, you know what? They are right! I tried to manage time, many times to be fair, and nothing changed! There were still 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in a hour and try as I might to change it, there were still only 24 hours in a day!
Can Time Be Manipulated? Automation!
The best way to achieve more in your business is to automate processes. At Honey Bee Accountancy we are huge fans of Xero and Quickbooks. Both of these online cloud packages can be used to automate everyday business processes and therefore save time! Woohoo, we’re almost the Dr Who of business!
Case Study: Social Media Guru
Honey Bee Accountancy have working with a West Midlands based Social Media strategy and management company. They have a large number of “retainer” clients, i.e. clients that they bill the same amount each and every month. Previously, each month the invoices were manually created on a individual basis. Obviously, as the business grew the invoicing took longer each month.
By using Xero (Beautiful Accounting Solution), we helped them to automate all their monthly retainer invoices and saved a nice tidy amount of time.
We recently spoke to the director of the Social Media business and they told us that now they had saved over 8 hours each month. They now have capacity to put on monthly training workshops that they can charge over £100 per seat for.
Let’s say that they can attract 10 delegates a month, that’s potentially an additional income of £12,000 per year WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL COST – the automation is free.
Case Study: Health Nutritionist
Over 12 months ago, we started working with a health nutritionist based near London. They struggled to track their expenditure, they would loose receipts, etc. We help automate their tracking of expenditure by using Receipt Bank (Work smarter. Grow faster. Go further.). By using Receipt Bank they were able to electronically capture receipts at the point of incurring the expenditure, then for regular expenditure such as postage or let’s say business networking, you can set up some rules with in Receipt Bank so that your expenditure is automatically published to your accounting software (either Xero or Quickbooks aka QBO).
The impact of this time saving was immediately noticed and such was the impact that it’s almost impossible to quantify the time savings made. But now there’s now late filing of accounts, so penalties are avoided, plus all expenditure is captured so there are potential tax savings that can be made.
Receipt Bank also conforms to HMRC digital standards and means to no longer need to keep paper copies of receipts (See previous blog)
The BIG Question!
I know you are all bursting to know, who is my favourite Dr Who character!
Well, that’s an easy choice. The first Doctor I saw was Christopher Eccleston but I didn’t really like him and then….. Step up David Tennant! Good old Tennat is my old time favourite Dr Who. I love the pinstripe suit and trainer combination, plus I think he’s got to be the funniest Dr ever. Plus, he’s an amazing actor I plan to watch him perform Shakespeare at some point!
Then my favourite “non” Doctor Who character, there’s really only one choice!
“Hello sweetie”! Yes, it’s the one and only Melody Pond or better known as River Song – is it any wonder I secretly think I’m The Doctor. ?
